Kamala Harris and Jill Biden both supported emerging US designers last night

Today marks the day that Joe Biden will be sworn in as President of the United States – and the historic date that the country will welcome its first female vice president, Kamala Harris.

And, while the big event takes place later this afternoon, yesterday evening saw another important moment as the couples arrived in the capital for a service, where Biden, Harris and their spouses paid their respects to the almost 400,000 Americans lost so far in the Covid-19 pandemic.

The president-elect and the vice president-elect were joined by Harris’ husband Douglas Emhoff and Biden’s wife Jill at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC, where 400 lights were placed to honour the victims.

For the occasion, the first in a busy few days of events, both women chose to support emerging US designers.

Harris wore a camel coat by Pyer Moss, a New York City-based brand led by Kerby Jean-Raymond, a designer who has been making waves in the industry for a few years now, winning the CFDA Fashion Fund Prize in 2018, and making headlines for his politically conscious collections and catwalk shows.

Meanwhile, Biden chose a full purple look by Jonathan Cohen, another emerging independent designer who champions upcycling and sustainability.

Both designers took to social media to express their gratitude at the news.

“It is a true honour to have Dr Biden wear Jonathan Cohen as the first family arrives in Washington DC,” Cohen wrote on Instagram. “I am beyond humbled to play a small part in this future administration.” Jean-Raymond simply posted a striking picture of Harris with a wave emoji.

These outfit choices could signal what we can expect the women to wear at today’s inauguration, as well as for the next four years, where emerging designers and young fashion talent will be put centre stage. The ladies will also likely shine a light on immigrant-founded fashion labels, something they both did at the election victory party in November, with Harris wearing Carolina Herrera and Biden opting for Oscar de la Renta.
