In photos: Kate Moss’s best party outfits in the 1990s

As Kate Moss stars on the two covers of British Vogue’s January 2021 issue—marking almost 28 years since her publication debut at just 19 years old—it’s easy to see why her inimitable influence has had such staying power since she exploded on to the fashion scene in the early 1990s.

A timeless icon, notorious for her exploration of daring style, the supermodel was one to watch from the very start—as proven at the 1993 Elite Model Agency ‘Look of the Year’ party, when she wore an unforgettable see-through slip dress. “I went with Jimmy B [hairstylist James Brown] and Corinne Day to the Elite party,” she told British Vogue in December 2020. “I had no idea why everyone was so excited—in the darkness of Corinne’s Soho flat, the dress was not see-through!”

For decades since, Moss has been a source of sartorial inspiration for each generation, especially when it comes to her 1990s and 2000s looks. From the chainmail numbers she and BFF Naomi Campbell wore to the 1999 Donatella Versace bash (recently reimagined by Dua Lipa) to her love affair with the classic little black dress, Moss knows what she’s doing when it comes to party style.

For a dose of festive-season outfit inspo (even if the celebrations are at home), Vogue has compiled nine of Kate Moss’s most high-octane party looks that will make you excited about 2021.

1. The black dress

One of Moss’s favourite go-to party looks has always been the classic ‘little black dress’ with a unique, sexy spin. Here, she’s seen in a cinched version with an open neckline alongside musician and then-boyfriend Antony Langdon at the Talk magazine launch party in New York, 1999.

2. Cowboy cosplay

Everyone loves a themed birthday party—especially when it’s The Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Woods’ 50th, as pictured here in Kingston upon Thames, London. In a rock’n’roll western spin, Moss pairs cream tones and denim (with a top that needs its own invitation) to cosplay as the bad guy in 1997.

3. Power dress

A style that was particularly popular in the 2010s — a fitted LBD with a high neckline and multiple straps — Moss got there first (as always) with her Versace number in 1995. Here, she’s pictured with then-boyfriend, actor Johnny Depp.

4. You’ve got (chain) mail

The ultimate dynamic duo of the 1990s, BFFs Moss and Naomi Campbell gave us the perfect party dresses in 1999 as they made their way to Donatella Versace’s Diamonds Are Forever charity gala. “That was a great night. I met Prince Charles. We came straight from the Versace runway, it was so much fun,” Moss later told Vogue.

5. Grown-up Mossy

In a beautiful silk-cream slip (which resembles Bottega Veneta’s modern-day silhouettes), Moss showcases the kind of ultimate party-wear elegance that we all should have in our closets at an event honouring fashion photographer Richard Avedon (next to Moss) and his work, in New York 1993.

6. Glitz and glam

Who knew that a mauve velvet coat and a sequin mini bag from 1998 would be exactly what we need to elevate our festive looks in 2020? Moss adds the perfect finishing touch at a Vogue party held at London’s Lisson Gallery.

7. The muse

In an ultimate throwback to the 1990s, the zebra-print strappy dress (worn with one strap off the shoulder for maximum effect) is still a wardrobe staple today. Here, Moss is pictured alongside Donatella Versace at New York’s Club Twilo in 1995.

8. The most-famous slip

Possibly one of the most famous party dresses of all time just has to be this transparent slip worn by a 19-year-old Moss at the 1993 Elite Model Agency ‘Look of the Year’ party.

9. Little black dress (reloaded)

Another party, another little black dress—but Moss always finds a way to make the party staple unique and interesting. Here, she sports a laid-back elegance, with micro-thin spaghetti straps and an up-do at legendary nightclub Les Bains Douches during Paris Fashion Week, in the 1990s with Johnny Depp.
