When the leaves change colors, it’s time for a wardrobe change.

So we scoped out Asbury Park boardwalk and downtown, Broad Street in Red Bank and the Grove in Shrewsbury to get a feel for this year’s fall trends from Jersey trendsetters. Here are some of their fashion favs.

The ‘chunky’ sweater

Julia Mechanic of Bradley Beach: Mechanic, who works at Free People in The Grove, said her go-to fall piece is an oversized sweater, and she describes the store’s fall aesthetic as “trendy, unique, and a little bit boho but edgy at the same time.”

Emma Clarke of Freehold, who works at Anthropologie in The Grove, says the fall aesthetic is all about “layers and bundles but also bright colors and fun, quirky pieces.” Emma says she’s all about the “chunky” sweater.

Samantha Quintas of Sayreville, who works at Francesca’s in The Grove, said her favorite fall clothing items are lots of sweaters and she says the fall fashion keyword in the shop is “cozy.”

“We want you cozy whether you’re outside, sitting, or indoors,” Quintas said. “We want you bundled up in warmth and looking good doing it.”

Jamie Stiles of Wanamassa, a manager at Urban Outfitters on Broad Street in Red Bank, said the holidays will bring lots of dresses with “sparkle and sequins.”

But, she added, “There is a big focus on denim going into the colder months with our Levis and our own brand, BDG. And, graphic tees are big for us going into fall and winter.”

Her favorite fall clothing item? You guessed it: sweaters.

Chic, casual scarves

Jackie Mehlman of Middletown is a manager at the Lucky Clover on Broad Street in Red Bank.

“[Lucki Clover’s fall looks are] cozy, chic and casual…but very trendy as well.”

Mehlman said her favorite fall clothing item is a scarf, specifically the Free People scarves they sell at Lucky Clover.

Comfy sweatpants and leggings

Nyla Wotruva, 14, said her favorite fall clothing item is sweatpants, specifically because they are comfortable in the cold weather.

Beth Trigini, 50, said, “My favorite fall item is my corduroy leggings because they keep me very warm on cold mornings and evenings.”

Animal-print jackets

Carolyn Fernandez, who walked along Asbury Park boardwalk, said of the leopard skin jacket she was wearing: “It’s just so easy. It’s very versatile. I wear it everywhere, with jeans with a dress, I get a lot of compliments.”

Wear-anywhere boots

Lisa Demasi, 58, said boots are her favorite fall clothing item because of their versatility.
